Vision for WJEA:
Our state organization is at a wonderful, critical point in its
history. For the first time ever, WJEA has hired an executive director
who will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the
organization. Frankly, we couldn't have hired a better person -
outgoing multiple-term president Kathy Schrier. This new organizational
configuration will afford the incoming president the opportunity to
focus his or her efforts on the broader issues facing journalism
education and scholastic journalism in this state. For example, as you
know, WJEA continues to fight the good fight for student press rights
legislation in Olympia and I would certainly continue that effort.
Additionally, we are seeing an encouraging influx of relatively new
advisers to
the profession and they need all the support and collegial networking
we can provide. However, at the same time we're losing some of our best
veteran advisers due to several unfortunate situations, such as what
has happened in the Everett School District the past three years.
Clearly, we need to continue to extend and strengthen our
organization's support net.
